Birth of Nicolas Fouquet (1615-1680), surintendant des finances (1653-1661) and great patron of the arts, as attested to by his chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte. In 1661, threatened by his powerful minister’s influence, Louis XIV had him imprisoned for life.
The Triple Alliance is formed between England, Sweden and the United Provinces of the Dutch Republic in an attempt to curb Louis XIV’s ambitions to extend his influence and territories.
During the War of Devolution, Louis XIV initiates secret negotiations with the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I to establish the Treaty of Partition, an agreement dividing the dominions of Spain between France and the Empire in anticipation of the demise of the sickly Carlos II. Their plans are frustrated by Carlos’s unexpected longevity.

Having negotiated the Treaty of Lyon with Spain, France gains the territories of Bresse, Bugey, Valromey and Gex.
