Application deadline: February 28, 2015

Interdisciplinarity. We offer three main specializations at the masters and doctoral levels in French: French Studies, French Linguistics and French Language Learning. Graduate students in French can also obtain a Ph.D. Certificate in Romance Linguistics and in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education(SLATE), and can have graduate minors in area studies. Studies of French intellectual history, critical theory, cinema and gender, immigration, the Mediterranean, French and francophone literature, and Proust and his era are particularly well-represented. Thanks to the individual teaching and mentoring of all our graduate students, we are proud to report, for many consecutive years, a nearly 100% job placement rate for our doctoral students who sought academic employment in the U.S.

Financial Aid. All admitted students receive financial aid for 4 to 6 years either as fellowships or teaching and research assistantships. Students teach three courses per year to train in teaching and pedagogy while earning a stipend ($16 000 in 2014-15) for nine months that allows them to live comfortably in Champaign-Urbana. In addition, the department offers summer fellowships, support for conference travel, opportunities to study abroad in Europe and Quebec, and release time for students focusing on their research. The most highly qualified students can receive prestigious School and College fellowships as well as external fellowships and grants. Students with interest in Proust Studies and digital humanities can apply for a paid research position as Kolb-Proust Archive Graduate Assistant.
