New Directions: French Scholarship on Early Modern France
Edited by Hilary Bernstein, University of California, Santa Barbara
In June 2011, the journal Histoire, économie, société put out an issue guest edited by Michael Breen showcasing recent work done by younger North American historians of early modern France. The articles were published in French in order to enable a wider readership. In response, the editors of French Historical Studies decided to devote a forum to the work of several younger, dynamic French historians of the early modern period in order to enhance familiarity with their approaches. The editors again turned to Michael Breen to solicit and edit this selection of articles, which have been translated into English so that non-specialists may also enjoy them. The forum appeared as “Self, Family, Religion, and Society: New Directions in L’Histoire Moderne in France,” French Historical Studies 28, no. 4 (October 2015): 525-631.
In conjunction with the publication of this forum in French Historical Studies, an issue of H-France Salon has been organized to further the scholarly conversation surrounding Francophone and Anglophone approaches to early modern French history. The issue begins with the video of a session that took place at the Society for French History Studies Annual Meeting in Montréal in April 2014. In this session, three of the five authors whose articles appear in the French Historical Studies forum spoke about their particular professional trajectories and research methodologies. They presented their thoughts on their particular subjects, preceded by a few words from Michael Breen on the process of editing the two journal issues. The second component in the H-France Salon issue includes three written essays by Anglophone historians in response to the articles presented in the FHS forum. The H-France Salon concludes with a reflection by Michael Breen on the essays.
