CALL FOR PAPERS

Australian Society for French Studies

XXIV Annual Conference

Adelaide, December 7-9, 2016

University of South Australia & University of Adelaide

Mobilities and Migrations/Les flux migratoires

Deadline for abstracts : July 1, 2016

Mobility and migration are prominent subjects of debate across disciplines, propelled by the increased international displacement of individuals and groups. From forced migration to self-imposed exile, mobility takes many forms and its limits and possibilities are constantly tested by twenty-first-century developments.  In the context of France and the Francophone world, questions of migration are currently fiercely contested.  The blurring of borders and the challenge to the configuration of the nation-state provoke questions over national identity, belonging and exclusion.

We invite proposals for individual papers (20 minutes) and for panels (3-4 papers of 20 minutes each) related to the theme of mobility and migration.  We encourage participants to consider the past, present and future of mobility in the Francophone world.  Possible topics for discussion include:

Travel writing                                     Narratives of exile

Diasporic literature                          Translation as migration

Nostalgia                                             Enforced migration

Migration and education                              Mapping

Narratives of war and/or trauma              Urbanization and la banlieue

Adaptation                                         Transitional spaces, such as airports

Migration and Film                          Migration, the Body and the Emotions

Responses to Littérature-monde and changed notions of La Francophonie

Linguistic questions, such as challenges to the hegemony of the French language, the ‘unmooring’ of languages in the 21st century (Alison Phipps), ‘global French’, translanguaging and code-switching
