Hosted at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD, pronounced: rees-dee) and in a museum for the first time, the 70th New England Renaissance Conference unfolds on October 5 with the theme of “Motion, Rhythm, Shifts.” French culture will appear in Dan Ruppel on the “Superbe et imaginaire entree faicte à la Royne Gijllette passant à Venise…” (1582), part of a vast literature of parody and propaganda vilifying King Henri III of France, and in Todd Borgerding's paper discussing erotic madrigals such as Jacques Arcadelt’s “Il bianco e dolce cigno”. Costume designs for the stage by Jean Berain (1681) are included in the special Prints and Drawings exhibition; museum tours will also discuss works from France.
Registration is free but mandatory. Registration gives you access free admission to the RISD museum, tours of the early modern collections, an engraving workshop, tempera painting demonstration, a concert “Musical Bodies in Motion” and a reception.
