The Section of French and Francophone Studies, in the department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Swarthmore College, invites applications for a three-year position at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor of French. We seek a scholar working in French Studies in Medieval up to 19th-century with preferred specialization in one of the following areas : medical humanities, ecocriticism, or environmental studies to offer two undergraduate courses per semester at all levels of French (language, literatures, cultures) for the French and Francophone Studies program.

The successful candidate will have experience teaching in a student-centered environment, will demonstrate a commitment to strengthening the program (including active recruitment of French majors and minors), and will participate in cross-curricular connections. This position is outside the tenure stream and will begin in Fall 2021. Benefits package and salary competitive.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, with an expertise in Medieval up to 19th-century French studies, and a preferred specialization in one of the following areas: medical humanities, ecocriticism, or environmental studies. Fluency or near fluency in French and English required. The strongest candidates will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to creative and effective teaching and an active research program that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate-level in French and proficiency in the use of technologies for the language classroom. Collaborative and team-teaching. A knowledge of proficiency-based assessment, ACTFL standards is a plus.
