Centre College invites applications for a full-time visiting position of French, at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2026, for a one-year appointment. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in French or a related field by the time of appointment. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who are committed to undergraduate education, will contribute to the depth of our faculty, support our flourishing student body, and utilize a variety of pedagogical practices. As noted in the Statement on Community, The College strives to create an environment where differences are celebrated rather than discouraged, where individuals have the opportunity to exchange ideas and share in the richness of mutual experiences.
We seek a versatile and committed teacher with a strong dedication to undergraduate education in a residential liberal arts environment. The successful candidate will be a generalist able to teach French language courses, as well as courses in French culture, civilization, or literature, aligned with departmental needs and the candidate’s areas of interest.
The teaching load is typically two to three courses per semester (18 teaching credit hours for the academic year). A significant portion of the assignment will involve introductory French language instruction. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong record of successful teaching at the introductory level and an ability to engage students with a wide range of academic backgrounds and interests. Native or near-native proficiency in French is expected.
The successful candidate will join a community of teacher-scholars dedicated to excellent teaching and student mentorship, balanced representation, shared governance, interdisciplinary collaboration, global study, scholarly achievement, and service to the college and broader society. We offer a supportive community for faculty from all backgrounds, mentoring for early-career faculty, and ongoing professional development.
